The Spina Bifida Association of Kentucky has a mission to make the world a better and brighter place for all those impacted by Spina Bifida.

I think the world is a better and brighter place BECAUSE of someone with Spina Bifida!

Avery is an incredibly sweet and salty 5 year old! She is the best of both. She was born with Spina Bifida. Before Diagnosis Day, I knew next to nothing about Spina Bifida, but because of Avery I have learned. I have learned about love, acceptance, advocacy, disability, and so much more. I would be remiss if I were to say that I learned it all from Avery. The Spina Bifida Association of Kentucky has been instrumental in my journey as Avery's mom!

Avery is not your average five year old. She is not extraordinary because of Spina Bifida, but in spite of it. She is medically complicated (I find it impossible to consider someone ,as strong as she is, fragile.) She loves marshmallow cereal, YouTube videos, sweet tea, and her sisters (occasionally). She hates fruits and vegetables (she considers herself allergic), sharing (but if someone else has something she wants she's the first to tell you "sharing is caring", and not getting her way. We've spent more time than we'd like in the hospital in her last five years. Avery has undergone more than six surgeries; four on her brain and two on her spinal cord.

She is fiercely independent and overflowing with attitude and sass. Please don't tell her she cannot do something. She will prove you wrong...and it will be painful! She's funny and smart and kind and annoying and she packs a mean punch. I've never met a more passionate child! She's an aggressive hugger and a foot stomper. I really should invest in steal toed boots.

After Avery's diagnosis, I mourned the loss of the child I was expecting; the healthy, perfect child every parent hopes for. But her life isn't sad and she's no less perfect because of Spina Bifida. The world is a better and brighter place because of Avery and I am immensely lucky to be her mom.

SBAK has enhanced our lives beyond measure. Though this life isn't without struggles, we don't have to struggle alone! Please consider making a donation in Avery's name. Every penny raised goes towards the Spina Bifida Association of Kentucky's mission.
